YAKIMA, WASHINGTON AGENDA STATEMENT |
| | | | | | | | Item No. 6.N.
For Meeting of: January 3, 2023 |
| | | | | | | | ITEM TITLE: | Resolution authorizing the adoption of the 2022 Yakima County Hazard Mitigation Plan | SUBMITTED BY: | Aaron Markham, Fire Chief |
SUMMARY EXPLANATION: | The Yakima County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan has been reviewed and approved by the State and has been submitted to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for approval. This is an update to the 2020 City of Yakima Plan and the 2015 Yakima County Plan. A hazard mitigation plan is developed before the disaster strikes. Hazard mitigation planning has a wide range of benefits for our community. A well-organized plan will help us to document the hazards we face, the likelihood they will occur and our community's disruption. Under the federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 (DMA 2000), communities that do not have a FEMA approved hazard mitigation plan in place are no longer eligible for FEMA project grants under long standing programs such as the Flood Mitigation Assistance Program (FMA), Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) and the Building Resilience Infrastructure and Communities (BRIC). The next step in this planning process is for each participating municipality to adopt the revised plan. Once adopted, the planning team will meet every year to monitor and report on the progress of identified mitigation actions. |
