ITEM TITLE:Resolution authorizing acceptance of a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) Award for Systemic Pedestrian Safety Improvements Project 2675

SUMMARY EXPLANATION:

The City of Yakima was selected to receive the 2022 City Safety Program funding through the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) in the amount of $317,000, for the Systemic Pedestrian Safety Improvement Project 2675.

 

Systemic Pedestrian Safety Improvements will involve installing new controllers and modules on existing signal systems to allow them to be programmed for leading pedestrian intervals. The following intersections will receive signal system upgrades:

 

  • W. Lincoln Ave & N 5th Ave.
  • E. Yakima Ave. & N 3rd St.
  • E. MLK Jr. Blvd. & N. 1st St.
  • E. Lincoln Ave. & N. 1st St.
  • E. Yakima Ave. & 8th St.
  • E. Yakima Ave. & 6th St.
  • W. Nob Hill Blvd. & S. 24th Ave.
  • N. 40th Ave. & River Rd/Powerhouse Rd.
  • W. Mead Ave. & S. 3rd Ave.
  • E. Walnut & S. 6th St.

 

There will also be safety improvements at the intersection of 5th Avenue and D Street.  Those improvements will include curb extensions, or bulb outs, as well as painted crosswalks.  Construction is expected to begin in 2023 and is 100% HSIP funded with no local match required.
