ITEM TITLE:

Ordinance relating to traffic; amending the City of Yakima Municipal Code, Chapter 9.47, Vehicle Impounds

SUMMARY EXPLANATION:
The City of Yakima Municipal Code Chapter 9.47, “Vehicle Impounds” covers different types of vehicles and when they may be impounded.  The proposed ordinance would amend Chapter 9.47.072, “Unlicensed Vehicles”, and provide 48 hours notice to vehicle owners that their unlicensed vehicle may be towed.  This provides code enforcement officers the ability to use their discretion when considering impoundment and reasonable alternatives to impound.  The amendment would alleviate citizen complaints that they had no notice of the impoundment. The ordinance would also include the procedure for contesting a tow impound.  Allowing the City to impound vehicles that are parked on the roadway and are unlicensed will enhance overall quality of life and preserve the public peace, health, safety and economic welfare of the City of Yakima.
